the meaning

Behind The Title:

This body of work showcases a multitude of perspectives, all specific to interest, identity, lived experience, and the unique theoretical frameworks by which four separate individuals see and engage in the worlds around them. These are dance works that explore moments in time and imagination, seen through our eyes and seen through the eyes of another, and we invite audiences to join us in experiencing those moments. We chose the title Between The Lenses because we believe that artistic movement can always live within our line of vision; we believe that dance and movement comprise an art form that so powerfully connects us and our perspectives, even when it can only be seen through the lens of a camera or through a computer screen. These works and our movement on whole allow us to fill the in-between moments, to step outside of ourselves and into another, to explore far beyond our stationary bodies even without stepping out of our own homes.

Behind The Image:

This image is one taken during load in for last year’s Senior Work Concert. Historic Pease Auditorium is one of our two home theatres in Ypsilanti, Michigan and has housed senior dance majors’ final performances for the last sixteen years. This theatre marks the passing of the seasons for us, each winter another ballet, the first performance for many dance freshmen, and each spring another milestone for dance graduates. It is the theatre in which we attended University orientation activities during our first years of higher education, and the theatre where we last roll up the marley alongside our undergraduate dance family. This photo is an unfinished moment, so familiar to what we and many dancers around the world are feeling frozen in now, but so wonderfully shares with you a piece of this work and our traditions.
